URS Sidecar Champion 1968 Fath/Kallauch by MEA Kit 43
We’re used to seeing unusual and important sidecar racing outfits from MEA and this machine has a fascinating story behind it. Rider and constructor Helmut Fath, an aeronautical engineer by training, had been an accomplished amateur rider in Germany through the 1950s, invariably winning on the few occasions he had the time and money to race. By 1960 he was a true international rider and won the world championship that year on a BMW. There then followed a long time off from the sport after a serious accident killed his passenger and nearly cost him a foot, but eventually he was back on a machine of his own construction with an engine designed by Dr Peter Kuhn and the outfit was named URS, after Fath’s home town of Ursenbach. It took a couple of years to iron out the teething troubles but in 1968 Fath became the first man to take the world title on a home built machine. The kit parts will need the usual careful preparation but the finished model shows that it will make a fairly convincing miniature and it is of course an important one.

About MEA Kit 43
An interesting range initially specialising in 1:43 motorcycles. The nature of the subjects and the size of many of the parts mean that these are best suited to those with good eyesight! Casting quality is variable and this combined with the size puts them firmly in the 'for the experienced modeller' category.
Alongside the bikes are a number of Dakar raid subjects and early Lotus race cars, again offered as kits and hand builts. The SPL series is hand built only and concentrates on very unusual race cars. Build quality is basic, variable and nowhere near the class leaders and usually presented in recycled Spark cases. Very interesting subjects that may otherwise not be modelled and therefore for the hardcore collector.
Made in France.
