Aston Martin DBR1 1st Le Mans 1959 #5 Shelby/Salvadori by SMTS

Four very significant versions of the Aston Martin DBR1 are offered here. The car had run in a couple of minor races and won at Spa early in 1957 but the first major challenge came at the Nurburgring when Aston Martin took on the might of Ferrari and Maserati, winning in some style. The rest of the season wasn't so successful and 1958 was something of a disaster but the same chassis scored Aston's most famous victory at Le Mans in 1959, albeit with significantly modified bodywork. That wasn't until after Moss had borrowed the sister car for the Nurburgring, winning again for the Feltham marque in what is described as one of the best drives of his career. After the 1959 season most of the cars were sold off and the third of the factory chassis was purchased by the Border Rievers team for Jim Clark to drive in selected events. The car was modified to the meet new regulations, the most obvious modification being a high tail and windscreen, and was painted a dark blue. The kit parts capture these body changes well and the smaller parts are cleanly cast. The main castings will need a bit of time spending while cleaning up though as there are a few file marks where they have had excess material removed. Wire wool and Scotchbrite should deal with these though.
