Gloster VI Golden Arrow Schneider 291:24 by Profil 24
Gloster VI Schneider 1929
The Gloster Aircraft Company built two near identical machines to contest the Schneider Trophy in 1929. Both were to the same design (the first monoplanes for the company) powered by a Napier Lion engine, the more famous of the two nicknamed Golden Arrow as the fuselage and wings were painted gold, the lesser known finished in Cambridge blue with gold wings. Unfortunately they had to be withdrawn from the race due to fuel feed problems in fast turns but the following day the gold machine set a new absolute air speed record of 336mph as an average over four runs, with a fastest measured mile of 351mph, only to be beaten within hours by the Schneider Trophy winning Supermarine S6. The kit is a diversion for Profil 24, who we know best for their Le Mans cars, and the kit certainly looks very good. The fuselage is cast as several hollow sections and the dry fit of these is pretty good with just a little flash removal and adjustment to make them very snug indeed. Three large sheets of brass etch cover the many surface radiators and there are recesses with hollows behind for these to fit into. A beaching trolley is included with trestles to go at either end and stabilise the display. Some advanced techniques will be needed, such as rigging the aircraft with tensioning wires which are to be made from a steel guitar string that is included. Overall an interesting kit of a fabulous subject and one that we know from Profil’s test build, will look fantastic when finished.
