Surtees TS10 F2 Champion 1972 Hailwood by MEA Kit 43
Surtees TS10 F2 Champ 1972 Hailwood
Kit available MEA064
Mike Hailwood took five race wins during the 1972 season to beat Jean-Pierre Jassaud to the European F2 title. The race number chosen by MEA for their model is not one of those, but the Crystal Palace race in which he finished second having started from pole-position. The basic shape of the car looks pretty good and there is a fair level of detail on show with very fine etch used for the suspension, proper damper units with rear springs and plenty of plumbing and wiring including on the exposed engine. This race version was presumably chosen because there are some very clear images of the car in action but here we have a few problems. In this race the top of the engine was not exposed, but had a solid piece of bodywork over it. Also, the rear wing endplates are the wring shape and in every race photos we’ve found from the season, the endplates and rear element were blue not bare metal. The wing details are relatively easily rectified by kit builders and it is a shame to cover the engine when so much work has gone into it, but it is frustrating as this is as easy to get right as wrong and our hand built sample is otherwise nicely built.

About MEA Kit 43
An interesting range initially specialising in 1:43 motorcycles. The nature of the subjects and the size of many of the parts mean that these are best suited to those with good eyesight! Casting quality is variable and this combined with the size puts them firmly in the 'for the experienced modeller' category.
Alongside the bikes are a number of Dakar raid subjects and early Lotus race cars, again offered as kits and hand builts. The SPL series is hand built only and concentrates on very unusual race cars. Build quality is basic, variable and nowhere near the class leaders and usually presented in recycled Spark cases. Very interesting subjects that may otherwise not be modelled and therefore for the hardcore collector.
Made in France.
